Stolitzky earns spot in finals

her way to the finals of the Coral Beach Invitational Tournament when she defeated the unfancied, and unseeded, Anne Alpert 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 on a day of record marathon matches.

Trailing 5-4 and love 40, the second-seeded Stolitzky held on to level the match at a set each, then broke once in the deciding set for the victory.

In addition to this contest lasting over three hours, Stolitzky later teamed with Mary Lanore Blair to outlast Gretchen Tunkey and Pat Kimmel 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 in another three-hour battle.

This contest was one of mixed fortunes as Blair and Stolitzky were up 5-2 in the first set only to lose, and were down 0-4 in the final set, but during a brilliant spell of spell-binding tennis stormed back to win six straight games for the match.

That was only two of the marathon matches of the day as Jan Quin and Rafael Fuentes pulled off a mild upset when they outlasted Gill Butterfield and Dick Mount 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. Butterfield had more on her mind than tennis as her former husband Fred Weiss, who only returned to Bermuda on Wednesday, passed away at dawn yesterday.

To top the record day of eventful matches, the unranked pair of Bob Kimmel and David Marshall upset top seeds Bruce Bernan and Carl Forsythe 6-4, 6-4 to reach the men's doubles final.

Marshall, still beaming with obvious pride following the contest, said, "We went into the match with a positive attitude that we could win if we attacked the net, and since both our games compliment each other, we went for it and won. In the end it was a nice feeling to win and to be in the final,'' concluded Marshall.

The day of long matches did not end until the unseeded pair of Earl Leader and David Lambert ousted third seeds Nick Frost and John Moore 6-7, 6-1, 7-5.
