Youngsters hold their own in Williamsburg

A group of six Bermuda youngsters recently returned from the US Kids World Golf Championships in Williamsburg, Virginia where, for the second successive year, they shaped up well against some of the best junior players from around the globe.

In the boys age seven group, Matthew Smith shot nine-hole rounds of 47 and 56 to finish on 103 which left him in 49th place in a field of 58. The winner fired two equal rounds of 32.

Among the eight-year-old boys, Ryan Roberts endured a nervous start but improved on his first round score of 53 to shoot 46 in the second round, leaving him in as tie for 56th. The winner completed rounds of 32 and 36.

William Faulks and Ben Scotten both played in the ten-year-old boys' group, firing 194 and 209 respectively for 36 holes.

Both players improved by over 10 shots in their second rounds, although finishing some way behind the eventual champion who carded rounds of 70 and 71 to finish at three under par.

Jordan Lamb, competing in the boys 11 group, recorded 194 for 36 holes in a strong field in which the winner fired five under par.

In the most senior group for 12-year-olds, Nick Jones finished tied for 48th with a score of 173 after a disappointing first round of 92 on a course with a great deal of water and in 93 degrees heat. He recovered well on the second day to shoot a nine-over par 81. The winner turned in two round of even par 72.

In the team event, Bermuda could only muster five players out of a maximum of 12 allowed and finished well down the field tied with Bolivia, Ecuador Team B, Rhode Island and Trinidad.

California were the clear winners over Mexico and Florida.
