PLP to host annual luncheon, Drum Major Awards on Sunday

The son of a Progressive Labour Party founder will make the keynote speech at the party's annual luncheon on Sunday.

Lorin Smith, son of PLP founder Albert 'Peter' Smith, is guest speaker at the Founders' Luncheon at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess.

Drum Major Awards will also be presented to people for outstanding community service.

Among the recipients are Dauphine Dickerson, an amputee who delivers food to the elderly at her church, the Allen Temple A.M.E. Mrs. Dickerson also carries out volunteer work at Sandys Secondary Middle School.

Dennis Parsons will also be honoured, for his work with Drumline at Sandys Secondary Middle School and the Youth Centre on Angle Street, Hamilton.

Bermuda war veteran campaigner Carole Everson will also receive an award, as will St. Monica's Road activist Joy Wilson Tucker. Mrs. Wilson Tucker is also founder and president of the Bermuda Heritage Association, and curator of the Bermuda Heritage Museum.

Six men who mentor P6 male students at Francis Patton School will also be honoured.

The Sons of Allen were formed eight years ago and consist of a group of men who attends Bethel A.M.E. Church.

At the school they assist with reading, social and emotional challenges, and adolescent issues. They also take the students out on educational tours.

The PLP Founders' Luncheon takes place from 1.30 p.m.
