Stars aim for KO Cup repeat

the semi-finals of the Knockout Cup, provided the weather allows the four quarter-final matches to go ahead today.

And Southampton Rangers and Bailey's Bay should join them from the other two matches, which see Rangers host PHC at Southampton Oval and Bay take on Social Club at Sea Breeze Oval.

Stars, who beat Somerset in the 1999 final, should extend their unbeaten record against St. George's at Wellington Oval in the top match of the day.

The teams met there in May, with Stars winning comfortably in the league.

However, today's match offers St. George's a good opportunity to avenge that loss and restore some confidence after last weekend's defeat to Southampton Rangers which all but ended their hopes of a league title.

St. George's inflicted first losses of the season on both Somerset and St.

David's and achieving a similar feat against in-form Stars would be a huge boost. The Knockout is also their last chance to win a trophy this season.

The Duckworth/Lewis system was used for the first time locally in the Camel Cup semi-finals and could come into play if blue skies don't return as forecasted.

Somerset should have a slight edge over Cleveland at home as they bid to reach the semi-finals for the second straight year. Cleveland had an easy victory over Warwick last weekend but their work will be cut out against a Somerset team that has improved steadily this season.

Cleveland will be looking to raise the level of their play ahead of next Saturday's Eastern Counties first round against St. David's.

The draw has been favourable to Bailey's Bay who won't have too much trouble with Social Club at Sea Breeze Oval. Social Club might have an extra spring in their step after their first win of the season against Somerset Bridge last weekend, but Bay have too much depth in both batting and bowling not to win comfortably.

The other clash between Rangers and PHC is a rematch of last year's Western Counties final which PHC won in one of the biggest shocks of the 1999 season.

Certainly Rangers will have learned from that experience not to take their opponents lightly.

The semi-finals are scheduled for September 3.

The Colts Cup Match takes the spotlight tomorrow as St. George's and Somerset clash at Wellington Oval.

Last year the match was brought forward to a date before Cup Match -- traditionally it has been held in September -- and again the day has been cleared to allow the youngsters from St. George's and Somerset to take centre stage.

St. George's are the defending champions.

St. George's team: Travis Smith (capt), Mackie Crane (vice capt), Detroy Smith, Jocal Burgess, Javoni Fubler, Landro Minors, Brian Phipps, Fiqre Crockwell, George O'Brien, OJ Pitcher, Michelle Paynter. Res: Keshi Trott, Orande Bascome. Players are asked to report at 9.45 a.m. sharp for an 11.00 start. Attempts to obtain the Somerset team were not successful.
