All-stars beat celebrities in fun-packed festival match
Bermuda Under-11 all-stars were just too good on the day for a team packed full of local celebrities in a fun-filled festival match at the National Sports Centre on Sunday.
The light-hearted Hiscox 11 and Under Celebrity Cricket Festival celebrated Bermuda's 400th anniversary and featured 15 celebrities.
It was watched by a crowd of nearly one thousand people as the Under-11s defeated the celebrities by 37 runs.
Rai Sampson top scored for the all-stars with 14 runs, while Sanjay Dill and Deshun Hendrickson chipped in with 12 runs apiece.
The celebrities, who included Bermuda skipper Irving Romaine, Police Commissioner George Jackson, Sports Minister Glenn Blakeney., Teresa Perozzi, Jay Donawa and radio host Thaao Dill lost the toss and were sent to field first in the 24 over game.
Blakeney had the best bowling figures with one wicket for six runs off two overs, while Dill returned one wicket for eight runs from 1.3 overs.
Irving Romaine led the celebrities in their run chase with a knock of 18, while his batting partner Charles Duppin scored 16.
MVP of the day was cricketing novice Dill who achieved his goal of not getting out for a golden duck and managed eight runs.
In the second match of the day, the West defeated the East by 18 runs to win the battle of the bragging rights. The MVP for the East was Aaron Burgess and Alex Dore for the West.
Perozzi, who is Bermuda's first female world boxing champion, said she enjoyed the family fun-day but was in no rush to give up the gloves for a bat and ball just yet.
"Well I wouldn't quite give up my boxing career just yet," said Perozzi. "I need a lot of work but actually I really enjoyed the game and the whole day and would love to participate in it again.
"Next time I will put in some real training and be ready to hit some sixes."
Reginald Pearman, president of the BCB said, "The BCB would like to thank all the celebrities and the many volunteers and staff for taking part and organising what proved to be a great day of cricket for youth cricket and the local community.
"The event was a great success with lots of supporters enjoying the cricket and the many free activities around the field. In addition, I am pleased to announce that we raised $747 for the Sunshine League with our raffle.
"The BCB is extremely proud of the young boys and girls that participated showing tangible proof that youth cricket is flourishing in Bermuda."
