Four playreadings planned at Daylesford

The BMDS plans to stage a series of four rehearsed playreadings at Daylesford over the coming month.

Co-producer (with Helen Coffey) Denise Grubesich says that the opportunity for "new talent'' to work closely with more experienced members is an invaluable way to encourage newcomers and extend their working knowledge. "In fact, this will be the first time I've tried my hand at producing,'' admits the medical technologist. "I was impressed by the number of people of all ages who turned out for the auditions -- quite a few who were not necessarily members.'' Opening the mini-season will be Neil Simon's comedy, `God's Favourite'.

Although this will be David Petty's Bermuda debut as director, he undertook extensive theatre studies besides pursuing a BA in economics. (January 29 and 30).

`Five Women Wearing the Same Dress', by Alan Ball will be directed by police officer Nickki Durant. Known to local audiences for her appearances in Jabulani's `There Goes the Bride', the new director will find herself presiding over a play -- "a great `female' vehicle'' -- with another wedding setting. At university she obtained a degree in drama, television and film performance. (February 5 and 6).

A popular '60's comedy, `The Secretary Bird' by William Douglas Home was selected by director Alistair Vartan. He also proved his considerable talents onstage when he took a leading, comic role in Jabulani's `There Goes the Bride'. (February 12 and 13).

Finally, `Ravenscroft', described as a comic murder mystery, was chosen by director Monica Dobbie "because I couldn't put it down once I started reading it!'' Although this production marks her directorial debut, Ms Dobbie has played Belinda/Flavia in `Noises Off' and was the Fairy in the 1996 BMDS pantomime. (February 19 and 20).

All playreading performances are free (although donations covering the cost of royalties will be gratefully accepted) on a first-come, first-seated basis.

Doors open at Daylesford at 7 p.m. for curtain time at 8 p.m.
