Flu vaccines now available
This year's flu vaccine is now available.
As the flu season kicks off Dr. JJ Soares, Director of Hamilton Medical Centre is encouraging the public to get vaccinated. The flu vaccine is especially important for those with a weak immune system, such as the chronically ill, the very young and the elderly.
The flu virus changes every year, which makes an annual vaccination necessary.
The shot causes the immune system to produce antibodies against the virus which are effective for four to six months.
There are side effects such as temporary soreness at the injection site, and in rare cases, fever, fatigue and muscle aches.
Those under the age of six months and those who have experienced a severe allergic reaction to a previous flu vaccine should not use the vaccine. Neither should those with allergic reactions to eggs.
"Influenza vaccinations help prevent the infection and can reduce the severity of the illness if it does occur," says Dr. Soares. He encouraged members of the public to get the shot, a limited number of which are now available at the Hamilton Medical Center or through family physicians at a cost of $35.
Typical flu symptoms are headaches, chills, cough, fever, muscle aches and fatigue. Children may also experience nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Recovery usually takes a week to 10 days but some, especially the elderly, can die from pneumonia related to flu, or serious complications of the flu.
"Flu shots are especially important for children aged six to 23 months and for seniors over the age of 65," says Dr. Soares.
Others at risk from influenza include those with chronic heart and lung disease or other chronic conditions such as diabetes, anemia, cancer, immune suppression, HIV or kidney disease. Those working in healthcare who may transmit influenza to at-risk groups should also have the shot.
