tribute to themselves.
It was all part of the official kick-off to Senior Citizens Week.
The week, which runs to June 20, is being funded by the Department of Community Affairs within the Ministry of Development, Opportunity & Government Services.
It focuses on the impact of seniors in our community and celebrates their achievements with a noon concert in Victoria Park today, and on Friday at 11.30 a.m., when bands and choirs from Island schools get together at Shelly Bay for a picnic.
Government representatives to the kick-off included Premier Jennifer Smith, Development, Opportunities and Government Services Minister Terry Lister, Health and Family Services Minister Nelson Bascome, Opposition leader Pamela Gordon, as well as Opposition Patricia Gordon-Pamplin and Kim Young.
Mayor of Hamilton William Frith addressed the audience after which he opened the ceremonies.
Awards were presented to 28 seniors, including two centenarians and couples who have made outstanding contributions to the community.
Premier Smith said it was her: "Fine and pleasant duty on behalf of the people of Bermuda to open this week.'' She noted that there are 6,125 persons in Bermuda over the age of 65 and that by the turn of the century that number will increase to 7,500.
"Elderly have contributed much,'' Ms Smith added. "There is continuing usefulness of Bermuda's elderly. They contribute to society and continue to work for the benefit of the community.'' Ms Gordon said: "Young people need to know and appreciate the seniors.'' She noted: "I am very much looking forward to the two major celebrations this year and next, and the contributions you have made to the community.'' The National Liberal Party's Charles Jeffers said: "It's only right that the country take the time to honour you.''
