Practical joke item pulled from stores

Joke items which give off an electric shock have been recalled from stores after concerns they could harm children or those with medical conditions.

The Chinese-made items have been sold at the Dollar Depot stores and by peddlers across the island between July 2005 and January 24 this year.

The products are shocking staplers, shocking cameras, shock lighters, shocking cigarette cases and shocking Pens.

All products have been removed from stores while people who have bought them are being advised to immediately stop using them.

Consumer Affairs, in conjunction with the Marketplace stores and the Bermuda Police Service, are recalling them because they discharge an electrical shock that is capable of causing potential harm to users.

Rhonda Daniels, of the Consumer Affairs department, said: "The shocks are quite strong. There is a warning they should not be used on children under 14 and people with medical conditions."

The sale of the items breaches both the Consumer Protection Act 1999 and the Firearms Act 1973.

Consumers who have purchased these products at any of the Dollar Depot stores are urged to return them immediately. Their money will be refunded if they do so before February 28.

After that time they must turn the items in to the Police.

Consumers who purchased them from peddlers are urged to hand them in immediately to any Police station. These products will be destroyed. No one will be prosecuted for handing them in to the Police.
