BFA refuse to blow fuse over lights row

A National Sports Centre official has said that there will be no repeat performance of the floodlight failure which forced the abandonment of the game on Sunday night between Bermuda Under 20 and Major League Soccer?s New York/New Jersey Metrostars Under 19s.

Organised by Bermuda Football Association as part of the youth squad?s preparation for the upcoming CONCACAF World Cup qualifying tournament in Jamaica, the match had to be stopped after 74 minutes, as the lights stubbornly refused to turn on with darkness descending.

Metrostars were three-nil up at the time referee Lyndon Raynor called a halt to proceedings and were cruising towards a straightforward victory.

NSC general manager Cliff Wade said yesterday that the problem had been caused by a blown fuse, prompted earlier in the week by a electrical storm.

He assured the public however that the problem had now been remedied by electricians and that he did not foresee any further floodlight malfunctions affecting the next game at the NSC, to be held tonight at 6 p.m. between Bermuda Under 17s and DC United Under 16s.

?Obviously I?m not an electrician,? he said.

?But I have been told that the fuse has been replaced and the problem has been rectified and I?m confident that there will not be any further inconveniences.?

Meanwhile, BFA General Secretary David Sabir conceded yesterday that he was ?disappointed? the match on Sunday could not be finished, but stressed that he had no intention of ?blowing the issue up into a major controversy?.

?We?re obviously not thrilled about it,? he said.

?We wanted to play football and we brought in a team to make sure our under 20 squad was given a good work-out ahead of their trip to the Caribbean. But I?m not interested in making a big deal out of the situation. The Trustees have assured us that there will not be any further problems and I very much hope that they?re right.?
