Top post would be an honour says coach Bascome

Boulevard coach Andrew Bascome has emerged among the top contenders for the vacant senior national coaching job.

Bascome, who posseses UEFA, United States Soccer Federation, Brazilian, Concacaf and local coaching credentials, has already expressed a strong desire to fulfil a long-time ambition of coaching his country of birth at the highest level – or even serve as the BFA's youth director.

"It's an honour to be considered for the job. I love football and also love to teach and it would be a great honour to serve my country," the multiple Bermuda Football Association (BFA) Coach of the Year Award recipient commented.

Following a successful playing career, cut short by a knee injury, Bascome's extraordinary skills on the pitch have seemingly spilled over into the coaching realm where he has won eight major titles at four different clubs, including three Premier Division championships.

Bascome currently runs two football academies, one of which is based at Saltus Grammar School where twice weekly he puts youngsters through their paces.

Also vying to become senior national football coach is ex-Coventry City striker Kyle Lightbourne who has previous experience in the top position which, along with the youth director, is to become a full-time role.

Bermuda Football Association (BFA) Technical Committee chairman Robert Calderon revealed yesterday that association's Technical Director Derek Broadley is to meet next week with committee members to begin the process of reviewing applicants for both vacant positions – a process that could take at least another 90 days.

"The Techinical Committee will be reviewing recommendations from the Technical Director next week with regards to all coaching positions. What we have asked the Technical Director to do in essence is to provide a plan over the next 90 days and beyond regarding what is required which is to be reviewed and then forwarded to the full executive," Calderon explained.

In terms of the number of applicants who have applied for the association's two newest full-time positions, Calderon says he has been "encouraged" with the level of interest shown.

"What we have seen is obviously an interest from local coaches to be involved at the national level, which is a good thing," he added. "There have been a considerbale number of applicants who have applied for both positions which has been very encouraging.

"Next week we (Technical Committee) will be meeting with the Technical Director and at that point we will have a clearer picture as to where we go moving forward. And at this time all of the applicants that have previously applied are still being considered."
