In-form Burgess keen to play bigger role

Bermuda Hogges have been boosted by the news that in-form goalkeeper Nigel Burgess hopes to be available for the majority of their away fixtures in the US.

Burgess had informed coach Kyle Lightbourne he would be unable to travel for the bulk of this season but is set to perform a u-turn after celebrating his first Hogges clean sheet.

The popular 'keeper was at his agile best in Hogges' win over Richmond Kickers on Saturday, making a series of acrobatic saves to deny the visitors an equaliser and is now determined to make the number one spot his own.

With first choice stopper Timmy Figureido out for this season with a cruciate knee injury and Jason Williams having only just returned from a one-match suspension after his sending off against Real Maryland Monarchs, Burgess is in the driving seat after spending much of his Hogges career as the 'next cab in the rank'.

He said: "I'm definitely trying to work something out with my work and family so I can play in Hogges' away matches. Jason will be after my jersey but he knows he has a hard task ahead of him. It's a good friendly battle between us and we always push each other."

The Hamilton Parish 'keeper believes his man-of-the-match display against Kickers was his best performance in a Hogges jersey.

"I'm very pleased with my play against Kickers – that was Nigel I guess," Burgess said. "I think that was my best Hogges display. I stepped up to the plate and preserved the shut-out, my first for the Hogges.

"My confidence is so high at the moment and I'm determined to carry on putting on good displays for the Hogges to show the coaches why they have me on the team."

He added: "I pride myself on my good reaction saves and I was making them all last season for Hamilton Parish and so I'm pleased to bring them over to the Hogges."
