A man is fighting for his life in hospital after receiving multiple head injuries in an incident on Saturday night.
Conrad Rogers, 48, of Mount Hill Mews, Pembroke, was discovered unconscious on Middle Road near the Waterlot Inn in Southampton at about 10.45 p.m. on Saturday.
He was taken to the Intensive Care Unit of the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital where last night his condition was described as critical.
But Police are not certain whether Mr. Rogers was the victim of an attack or received his injuries in an accident.
Mr. Rogers has not regained consciousness since being found and detectives have been unable to interview him.
A Police spokeswoman said: "We are appealing for witnesses or to anyone with information about what is believed to be an assault.
"Mr. Rogers' injuries are considered to be life threatening and he remains unconscious.
"Anyone who may have seen Mr. Rogers or who can provide information is asked to contact Acting Detective Inspector Early Kirby on 234-1010.'' The blaze was confined to a store room, which was completely gutted. The rest of the building was damaged by heat and smoke.
Nobody was at the site at the time and it is believed a passerby raised the alarm.

An elderly couple were lucky to escape uninjured after their car plummeted from an upper parking level on Saturday afternoon.
The vehicle, driven by a 90-year-old Paget man who was accompanied by his 78-year-old wife, accelerated off the upper parking level of the Stonington College car park.
It is believed the car was in drive rather than reverse and mounted a curb, crashed through a wooden rail and landed on its front end in the lower parking area.
The car was damaged but the elderly couple were uninjured.
