Skipper Furbert salutes team-mates

Elated skipper Chris Furbert jr saluted his team-mates after Zebras applied the finishing touches to a first Premier Division title in eight seasons at Southampton Oval yesterday.

Thanks to the late heroics of player/coach Kyle Lightbourne, Zebras clinched the championship by a single point over nearest rivals North Village and also bagged the first jewel in the coveted triple crown in the process.

Furbert attributed hard work, commitment and a willingness to succeed as the hallmarks of his team's glory - but admitted they had to dig deep to get past a dogged Devonshire Cougars side.

"We had a bad start and it was really hard for us today. But we just stuck in there and ultimately Kyle came on and got the goal we needed," he said. "But we have worked hard for this all season and to achieve it today is really a blessing.

"We had to fight hard today but fortunately in the end it all worked out for us. We are now league champions and it feels excellent because it's been a long time."

Furbert also heaped praise on Zebras' loyal supporters, many of whom braved yesterday's inclement weather to cheer on their team.

"I would just like to thank our fans for all of their support," he said. "They have always been behind us, even when we were trailing in the final 15 minutes today. Our fans are truly the best."
