Three dismissed as Warren special settles Cup clash

(After extra time) In a game marred by three sending offs, Dwight Warren settled this Charity Cup clash at BAA on Sunday night for Boulevard when he scored a marvellous goal 14 minutes into extra time.

A stunned crowd of about 1,800, unaware that the golden goal rule was in effect, took some time to realise it was the winner.

But Warren and his teammates, who were heavily the underdogs, knew what was going on. Immediately they raced around the field in triumph giving no intention of returning to the middle to continue play as fans expected.

But it was one of those nights of the unexpected -- a night when the Bermuda Football Association showed neglect by not having a PA system to inform the fans of the ruling.

And the BFA won no praise for having just one executive member, second vice president Ellsworth Ratteray, show up and deal with the many administrative matters requiring attention during this season opener.

Warren's goal was a beauty. While standing just outside of the penalty box he coolly flicked the ball over the head of advancing centre-back Clifford Roberts, quickly rounded the defender, before steering the ball past the advancing Timmy Figuerido in the Vasco goal.

It ended a frustrating night for both teams who had players ejected. Vasco lost striker Dwight Basden after 65 minutes when referee Stuart Crockwell sent him off for dissent and then a player from each team was sent off for violent conduct after 82 minutes -- Leroy Stevens of Boulevard and Tafari Outerbridge of Vasco.

Vasco showed their early superiority and built a 2-0 lead after 41 minutes with Sinclair Gibbons heading home a cross from Otis Steede after 25 minutes and Kentoine Jennings scoring from a penalty kick after 30 seconds of the second half.

Vernon Eve failed to pull one back for Boulevard after 58 minutes when he missed a penalty as Figuerido dived to his right to push the ball wide, but the hard-working Vernon Phillips got the goal that Boulevard deserved when he scored from close in after 74 minutes.

After 82 minutes, Larance Durham fouled Amon Brown in the box and Kenny Darrell scored from the penalty spot to make it 2-2.

Jennings should have settled it for Vasco two minutes into extra time but his shot on the break struck goalkeeper Andre Hendrickson as he dived and went for a goal kick.
