del Plata, Argentina yesterday.

The day began with confirmation that track and field stars Brian Wellman and Troy Douglas were not going to compete in the Games because of nagging injuries suffered during medal-winning performances last weekend in Spain.

Triple jumper Wellman, who won a gold medal at the World Indoor Championships, and Douglas, who won silver at the same meet in the 200 metres, were Bermuda's best hopes to bring home medals from Argentina.

Another medal prospect -- sailor Peter Bromby -- failed to reach the semi-final round of the J24 class when a number of umpire calls went against him.

Bromby was so bitter that he threatened to quit match racing.

His venom was also directed at Bermudian adjudicator Dick Kempe whom he claimed contributed to a crucial loss against Canadian rival Ross MacDonald.

Said Bromby: "We had some real bad calls out there. The reason that the umpires are at this regatta is that they're not good enough to be anywhere else. The umpire calls all week have sucked.'' Paula Lewin, in the six-boat Europe Dinghy class, is still in a solid position to win a bronze medal.
