Top tennis juniors impress in Atlanta

Eight of the 11 Island youngsters competing in the 14-and-under section of the tournament won their first-round matches.

Six made it into the last 32 of their age group main draws and five of those have won through to the last 16.

Jovan Whitter, the number five seed in the 14-year-old boys' event, is safely through to the last 16, after beating Jay Patel in the third round.

In the same age group, Gavin Manders won two matches on the same day, beating Jordan Carter 6-4, 6-3, before easing past Joshua Buckley, but then went out to ninth seed Michael Hallford.

Philip Sousa beat Andrew Greba 6-3, 6-4, before going down to number five seed Seth Kines. Michael Higginbottom also reached the last 64, with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Stephen McConnell, before going out to second-seeded Scoville Jenkins.

Sisters Sasha, Zoe and Kara Fisher all competed in the 12-year-old girls' event. Sasha defeated Masy Swift and Zoe got the better of Lindsay Hearn, both by 6-2, 6-2 margins.

Both have reached the last 16, Sasha after beating 17th seed Mallory Burdette 6-4, 6-2 and Zoe by means of a 6-4, 6-4 defeat of Kerry Limbeek.

Kara went down 6-4, 6-3 to Christina Salerno in the first round.

And in the same age group, Ashley Brook lost her first-round match, a gruelling encounter over two hours, 25 minutes, against the more experienced Colleen McArthur, 0-6, 7-5, 6-3.

In the 12-year-old boys' event, both John Masters and Kyle Williams have won two matches to reach the last 16.

Masters beat Ryan Ford 6-1, 6-0 and then saw off Kevin Martin 6-1, 6-1, while Williams defeated Sammy Khadre 6-3, 6-1 and then came back from a set and 1-5 down to beat Oliver Reynolds 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 in a two-and-a-quarter-hour epic.

Danielle Downey lost 6-3, 6-4 to Erin Rogers in the 14-year-old girls.
