Outerbridge named Bermuda skipper
Stephen Outerbridge's dream of leading his country on the international stage became reality yesterday. The Bailey's Bay stalwart has been appointed as captain of Bermuda's national cricket team and he will now lead the Island at next April's ICC World Cricket League Division Three Tournament on local turf.Outerbridge said it was an honour to be appointed skipper.“It's an honour to be captain and I look forward to the challenges ahead and hopefully I can do good for Bermuda,” he said. “I always try to do my best in whatever I do and I'm sure not everyone is going to agree with every decision I make.“But at the end of the day I just want to win for Bermuda and basically do my country proud.”During his term as Bermuda's captain Outerbridge hopes to see the Island qualify for another major ICC tournament, as was the case several years ago when the national team qualified for the 2007 ICC World Cup.“In the next three years obviously we would like to qualify for a World Cup and I think the Twenty20 World Cup is very attainable,” he said. “I would also like to try and get us back into the World Cricket League Division Two.”Bermuda have been in freefall since appearing at the 2007 showpiece, losing their One-Day International (ODI) status and suffering relegation to the third tier of ICC Associate cricket. But, with the proper approach, Outerbridge is confident Bermuda can turn their flagging fortunes around.“I'm sure we can reach any goal we set ourselves in the short- term,” he said. “We just have to make sure we have management, coaching staff and the players all on the same page.”Outerbridge, who was voted as the Logic Player of the Year last season, replaces former English County player David Hemp who resigned as Bermuda's captain last month.Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) president Lloyd Fray said Outerbridge comes highly qualified for the job.“Under the captaincy criteria he was the outstanding candidate and possesses many qualities that we recognise are important for the leader of our senior team,” he said. “With Stephen's wealth of international experience in the junior and senior ranks, I expect that he will prove to be an outstanding captain and an excellent role model for our junior and senior players.”Outgoing national coach David Moore echoed Fray's sentiments.“Stephen has proven to be a natural leader on and off the cricket field and I fully expect him to do an outstanding job of leading Bermuda,” he said. “Stephen's commitment to excellence and adherence to international standards of preparation and practice is a shining example to the rest of the squad and our young cricketers.“I congratulate and applaud Stephen on his graduation into this vital role for Bermuda cricket.”Last summer saw Outerbridge guide Bay to Logic Premier 50-Over, Belco Cup, Eastern Counties and Lindo's Twenty20 glory.
