Social Club pin title hopes on trio

Joint leaders Social Club have left no stone unturned in a determined bid for Premier Division supremacy as the 2007 cricket schedule heads towards an exciting climax this weekend.

The Pembroke club will enter today's final round brimming with confidence and wary that victory against dethroned champions Southampton Rangers at

Devonshire Recreation Club will finally settle what has been a riveting two-horse race involving themselves and fellow league title hopefuls St. David's.

And to help boost their own chances of glory in today's crunch match, Social Club hierarchy have pinned their hopes upon explosive batsman Glenn Blakeney and all-rounders Jahmiko Marshall and Ricky Hoyte.

Blakeney has seen limited action this season but is always a threat at the crease, Hoyte is making only his second appearance of the season while Marshall has put school studies abroad on hold and returned for the big occasion.

Earlier this week Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) allowed Social Club's May 20 victory over St. David's to stand, leaving the two title contenders level on points and the championship on the line.

The Islanders had appealed against Social Club's four-wicket win at Lord's on the grounds that Hoyte was ineligible to play. But their appeals evidently fell on death ears.

Rangers pipped Social Club for the league title by a narrow margin last season. But the roles could be reversed today at the Den although Social Club could encounter stubborn resistance from a Rangers side who must win if they are to stand any chance of defending their Belco Cup title for a fourth straight year next season.

St. David's certainly would not have been amused with the Board's final ruling over the Hoyte affair that dragged on for months and must now see off lowly Flatts today at Lord's and then rely on Rangers to do them a timely favour. But the Islanders could have a battle on their hands as Flatts also have much to play for. Mathematically Dean Minors' team still stand a slim chance of avoiding joining Western Stars in the First Division next season should they get the better of St. David's and Cleveland County slip up against Somerset today at Southampton Oval.

In the event St. David's and Social Club remain tied at the top following today's matches, the latter will be declared winners via the head-to-head tie breaking method having swept this summer's league series over the Eastern Counties champions.

Elsewhere, Cleveland will look to get by Somerset and put their own relegation concerns to rest once and for all. However, Somerset are among a trio of clubs battling for the remaining two Belco Cup berths for next season and therefore could show up in an uncompromising mood.

Premier Division newcomers St. George's, who got their season off to a slow start, can finish on a strong note with victory over Stars tomorrow at Wellington Oval that could also guarantee them a Belco Cup spot next season place should either Rangers or Somerset stumble at the final hurdle.

The 2007 First Division schedule concluded last weekend with Devonshire Recreation Club wrapping up the title and nearby Central Counties rivals Police securing the remaining promotion spot to the top tier next season.
