St.George's stunned by Rec
St. George's 121 Devonshire Rec. pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the season when they stunned St. George's by three runs at home yesterday.
The East Enders, unbeaten since the Camel Cup final in May, looked like completing a narrow victory after Mark Ray (43) had engineered superb rearguard action.
But it was a former St. George's player who did them in during an electric five-minute spell that ended the match.
At 121 for eight, with Ray and Gregg Foggo already 30 runs into what seemed a match-winning partnership, the former responded to a call with the ball hit to Dexter Smith's left in the covers region.
Smith, whose fielding has never been the high point of his game, sprinted around and after a one-hand pick-up sent in a dart which beat Ray by a foot.
Devonshire were suddenly back in the match and three balls later, David Adams cover-drove a Leon Place delivery straight to Smith, setting off delirious celebrations.
Earlier, Winston Trott's three-wicket fifth over put Devonshire in with a fighting chance after St. George's pair Jason Lewis (14) and Eugene Foggo had added 29 for the first wicket.
Trott had Foggo (eight) caught at silly mid-off by Smith with his first ball and then pulled off the trifecta by dismissing Clay Smith for a two-ball duck caught behind by Donald Norford and then Dean Minors (six) three balls later, caught at square leg by Omar Amory.
Devonshire continued to chip away and were in control with St. George's at 56 for six before Ray found useful partners in Ryan Steede (11) and Herbie Bascome (11).
Twenty-two runs were added for the seventh wicket and 13 for the eighth, all vital, and then Ray stepped it up with five boundaries from seven balls as he sensed the end.
Trott finished with four for 35 from 10 overs and Amory four for 52.
Earlier, Steede claimed four for 33 to set Devonshire, who batted with 10 men, back on their heels and Dwayne Adams wrapped up the tail with three for 11 from 3.1 overs. Wendell Swan, who opened in place of Norford who did not arrive from work until the St. George's innings started, top-scored for Devonshire with 21.
Police 186 Western Stars 178 Police made it a weekend clean sweep of Western Stars yesterday with this exciting eight-run victory at St. John's Field in a Premier Division Overs match.
It marked the first loss of the season for defending champions Stars.
Bolstered by the batting of skipper Dennis Archer (48), Police's total of 186 proved too much for the home side who only just fell short.
Also among the runs for Police were Ferdinand Thorne with 29, and Daniel Reece with 26.
Gary Brangman was the top bowler for Stars with three for 27 while the seldom used Andre Manders returned three for 29.
Stars lost opener Treadwell Gibbons (five) with just six runs scored, but they fought back and were 117 for six and looking comfortable with skipper Arnold Manders and Ricky Brangman batting well. But once Manders was out for 34 at 117 for six, Brangman who was 34 not out, was unable to find a partner capable of putting on quick runs.
Jackman had two for 24, Roger Blades two for 36 and Thorne two for 45.
Southampton Rangers 171 Bailey's Bay 172-6 At Sea Breeze Oval, Bailey's Bay beat Southampton Rangers by four wickets with skipper Charlie Marshall taking four for 26 off 10 overs, including two maidens. Jermiko Marshall had two for 18 off 5.2 overs.
Darron Burchall was high man for Southampton with 44 while Keith Wainwright struck 38 and Carl Garzette 21 not out.
Clarkie Trott led Bay in reply with 43 not out. Also among the runs were Glenn Blakeney with 33, Corey Hill 21, Charlie Marshall 17 and Cal Dill 16 not out.
