Thomas tops rankings after tournament win

Sixteen-year-old David Thomas battled his way to the top of the junior tennis rankings yesterday when he demonstrated both his ability and his class in beating previous number one Na'im Azhar in straight sets to take the Boys Under-18 Open title at the Spring Break tournament.

Azhar managed just one game as Thomas breezed to a 6-0, 6-1 victory at the WER Joell Tennis Stadium.

It was the second big win for Thomas over Azhar in four days, having defeated his rival, also in straight sets, on Monday to take the rain-delayed Grotto Bay junior title.

Those wins combined to take Thomas to the top of the Under-18 rankings.

Though it was an near perfect day for tennis, young Azhar had other things on his mind against his dominant opponent. In addition to having to worry about Thomas, Azhar's thoughts likely drifted back to England where his grandmother was buried earlier in the day.

If winning the singles crown wasn't enough, Thomas then teamed with MacKenzie Bean to defeat Azhar and Fraser Moore 6-0, 6-1 to take the Open Doubles title. Neither match lasted more than a half hour.

Meanwhile, 13-year-old Cayla Cross also made a big impression in the girls' division. After finishing as runner-up in the Grotto Bay tournament, Cross roared back to win the Under-14 and Open titles to take over the top girls' spot in the rankings.

She did it the hard way, coming from a set down to beat her more experienced and favoured opponent Jacklyn Lambert 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.

The inaugural Spring Break tournament saw several players win their first event.

Lynn Currie took the Girls' 12 singles title with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Jessica D'Estrelle while Ryan Benevides outplayed Domico Watson, winning 6-0, 6-0, and Chase Urban overcame his temper and opponent Matteo Frazzoni, 6-4, 6-1, to take the Boys' 14 crown.

Tyler James came away with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Sophie Rathjen to win the Girls' 12 consolation title.
