Howzat! Bermuda?s cricketers pull off stunning triumph ? again

The golden cricketing summer continued yesterday as Bermuda pulled off a stunning 49-run victory against Canada in the Intercontinental Cup.

Having been bowled out for a paltry 125, Bermuda?s national team cricketers found themselves up against it in the leafy confines of the Toronto Cricket Club on Wednesday ? the first day of three. But demonstrating the new-found determination and togetherness which have been the hallmark of national coach Gus Logie?s brief time at the helm, the team fought back superbly on days two and three ? quickly wiping out the first innings? deficit of 84 before setting the hosts a tricky total of 229 runs to win, thanks mainly to a barnstorming 120 from vice-captain Janeiro Tucker.

And with the pitch deteriorating rapidly yesterday afternoon, Bermuda?s bowlers took full advantage, leaving Canada reeling at 73 for six.

But just to add to the excitement, Canada staged a late-afternoon fight-back through their lower order batsman, and looked to have got out of jail at 164 for the loss of no more wickets.

However, just when victory seemed to be slipping through Bermuda?s fingers, the veteran Western Stars allrounder Hasan Durham stepped heroically into the breach, snapping up three quick wickets with his left arm spin and pulling off a crucial run out ? efforts which handed the team a victory they thoroughly deserved.

The Cayman Islands is all that now stands in the way of a semi-final berth in the prestigious International Cricket Council (ICC) sanctioned competition, with the second three-day game due to get underway tomorrow.

The semi-finals will take place in the southern African nation of Namibia later this year.

In July, Bermuda secured a place at the World Cup for the first time in its cricketing history as a result of finishing a credible fourth at the ICC Trophy in Ireland.
