Scores of blackpoll warblers were among more than 50 species of migratory birds spotted on the Island at the weekend by members of the Bermuda Audubon Society.The society recorded the air arrivals in celebration of International Migratory Bird Day on Saturday.Society president Andrew Dobson said: “For Bermuda, the most important aspect of the life cycle is providing the necessary habitat conditions for birds as they head south in the fall or north in the spring. Habitats including wetland areas, mangroves, woodland, grassland and beaches are all critical, not just for the birds to refuel during stopovers, but also for the many migrants that will winter in Bermuda.“Public awareness and concern are crucial components of migratory bird conservation. Citizens who are enthusiastic about birds, informed about threats, and empowered to become involved in addressing those threats, can make a tremendous contribution to maintaining healthy bird populations.“On Saturday members of the Bermuda Audubon Society recorded more than 50 species of migratory bird. The Blackpoll Warbler can be one of the most abundant fall migrants in Bermuda. “There was a fallout of these birds on Sunday with at least 100 at Fort Scaur alone. These small land birds breed in the boreal regions of northern Canada and migrate over the ocean to South America.”
