Cafe culture for North Hamilton
Plans for a private members' lounge could perk up nightlife in North Hamilton through the cultivation of a café society.
Carlton Simmons, co-founder of Youth on the Move, has applied for planning permission for change of use to turn a storage basement into a private members' club at 42 Angle Street.
Mr. Simmons, a co-owner of the property, is keen to develop a café culture at the venue. He hopes to open until 10 p.m. on weekdays and 1 a.m. on weekends.
The planning application is not connected with networking organisation Youth on the Move, but Mr. Simmons said its members would form the basis of the clientele. Membership, however, would also be open to non-members. Youth on the Move promotes entrepreneurship and social interaction among Bermudians in their 20s and 30s, and is based in Elliot Street.
Describing the private members' club, Mr. Simmons said: "It will be more of a café society atmosphere for up-and-coming, promising young Bermudians. A place where people can have fun, network and talk about politics.
"In the past we've done a similar thing but have used various bars as our venues, so this is to create more of a home. We're trying to create an atmosphere which is a bit different, to allow for different dialogue, to talk about governance, politics, and being more involved in the community."
Proposed site coverage is 1,588 sq ft. The basement bar lounge would include a kitchen, while a section of the upper ground floor will be turned into office space. Total proposed site coverage is 1,588 sq ft.
In a letter to planning, Juan Smith of agents s.h.y Architecture, said: "The club space will include a kitchen serving pre-cooked foods, bar area, lounge and support areas, and shall be accessed via an interior from the north-east area of the building off Angle Street."
