We’re not a big club anymore, says Trojans skipper
Jensen Rogers insists that despite Somerset Trojans’ encouraging start to the Digicel Premier Division season they have a long way to go before they can consider themselves a ‘big club’ again.Trojans are in fifth place in the league, six points behind leaders PHC, a position that many didn’t expect the newly promoted side to be in at the Christmas break. And wins over Robin Hood, Boulevard, St George’s and champions North Village have catapulted the side up the table after their opening day loss to PHC.While Rogers, the Trojans skipper, is delighted to have proved the club’s critics wrong, he reckons his team still have plenty to do before they can consider the campaign a success, cementing themselves as a Premier Division powerhouse once again.“It has been a good campaign thus far, we have proven a lot of the critics wrong with our play and the amount of points we have picked up so it is good so far,” said Rogers. “We are on our way to meeting our goal of finishing in the top six at worst.“We have had our ups and downs in games but gaining experience for the younger players, so things can only get better from here.”The defender admitted that his side’s shortfalls during the first half of the season were down to defensive lapses when leading games. Of their nine games in the first half, only one had less than three goals and Trojans lost three of those matches by the odd goal.Somerset’s supporters only have to look at the goal difference to understand what Rogers is talking about. The side have scored 20 goals, while conceding 21.“Our main problem is being inconsistent and our ability to adapt to changes in a game that can alter the result of a match. When the going gets tough we have to be able to change our game to get the result,” said Rogers.“We have no problem scoring goals, we just have to be able to defend the goals that we do score. A perfect example of this is the loss to Southampton Rangers where we were up and let that game slip late on, it was shock to us but we learned from that.“Defending as a unit is another thing that we have to address and the coaching staff are on top of that for future games so it looks promising.”Not getting ahead of himself, Rogers made it clear that should his men be presented with a chance to go top or even win the league they wouldn’t think twice about grabbing the opportunity with open arms.“If we are close enough to getting ourselves in the title race then we will certainly look to do that,” he said. “We have a lot of home games coming up and if we can get the results then it will be possible.“A few wins at home and on the road could see us up there with the big boys but at the end of the day we want to re-establish Somerset as a big club as we once where in past years.”
