Rangers claim second trophy

Southampton Rangers are only the second team to etch their name on the Lindo’s T20 title after they beat reigning champions St David’s by 19 runs at the National Sports Centre (NSC) yesterday.Rangers ended the season the same way they started it, by hoisting a title, and are now the owners of two of the three major titles this year, having already won the BELCO Cup.“It was a good win for us after everything that has happened for us both this year in our league campaign and last year in not playing in this competition,” said skipper Dion Stovell.“Whenever you get a low score like the one we got, you always have to buckle down and apply pressure early on and that’s what we did from the outset.“It feels good to end the season this way, we started the season with the BELCO Cup and will now end it as the T20 champions.”Winning the toss and electing to bat first, Rangers never got going in their quest to set the champions a formidable total, losing wickets at regular intervals throughout their innings.Stovell (31) stabilised the innings but never had a partner at the other end long enought to find a steady rhythm as Loren Marshall spearheaded the Islanders attack, claiming four wickets.Only Kwame Tucker (19) and Rohan Simons (14) made double figures as the side were bowled out for 102 in 18.4 overs.Justin Pitcher and Cejay Outerbridge grabbed three wickets apiece to help restrict Rangers to a gettable total.St David’s, three-time defending champions, were in search of their fourth successive title in the shorter format but were always going to be behind their challengers as they could only field ten men.The total posted by Rangers in the end was enough as Stovell singlehandedly ripped through the St David’s batting line-up, snatching four wickets.Ajuan Lamb (21) started the innings but, as was the case with Stovell, didn’t have enough support have a real go at chasing down the target.Fellow opener Pitcher and number three bat Fiqre Crockwell both got ducks to leave their side in all sorts of trouble early on.Landro Minors topped scored with 28 in a losing effort.Janeiro Tucker took two wickets to help Stovell while Dwayne Leverock also grabbed a wicket.
