Tyrell takes MVP title

Young Men Social Club's Jeffrey Tyrell walked away with both the Premier Division's MVP and highest batting average awards at Bermuda Cricket Board's (BCB) prize presentation held on Saturday night at Warwick Workmen's Club.

The veteran, who starred with bat and ball last season for champions YMSC, said he was surprised to have the accolade bestowed upon him.

"It came as a shock at first when I heard about it, but seeing how good my team did this year, I guess you could say they pushed me to getting this honour," said Tyrell.

"Everyone doubted us when we won the league last year, and again this year.

"Through the off-season many people were saying we didn't deserve it and so forth, so it gave us a sense of hunger and determination to prove the doubters wrong."

Tyrell recorded an astounding seven not-outs in his nine innings, one of which was included in one of the highest partnerships in the season – an 123-run stand with coach Charlie Marshall.

His total of 236 runs in the season were not the most by a player by quite a long shot but his ability to produce runs when his team need them proved to be the deciding factor in his side retaining their 50-over league title.

He also bowled the second most overs in the league (98), and claimed fourth most number of wickets (25).

"I guess you could say it turned out to be a bit of a strategy with me batting way down the order as we have a lot of batsmen in our team," Tyrell added.

"So when I got to the crease at times the bowlers were tired or not bowling 100 percent, so I found it easier to do what I needed to do.

"Lower down the order I was able to have guys hang in there with me and get the runs to win games.

"It feels good to win back-to-back titles and to be part of a club that is at the top."

Also receiving notable awards on the night were Stephen Outerbridge, who was voted First Division MVP for his role in guiding Bailey's Bay back to the top flight, and Joshua Gilbert, who was voted Youth Player of the Year.
