FIFA call falls on deaf ears
On an evening when FIFA put the accent on fair play, Boulevard's Stevie Wade had the dubious distinction of being ejected in this Martonmere Cup clash at BAA Field on Saturday night.
FIFA's message, which Bermuda Football Association general secretary David Sabir expressed via a PA system prior to the kick-off, appeared to fall on deaf ears with the Boulevard striker sent off after just 21 minutes and several other players booked for fouls.
Wade got the red card after directing his anger at linesman Gregory Smith and his departure made it even more difficult for Boulevard, who were already unsettled, to find any sort of rhythm for the remainder of the game.
However, they went into the match with their semi-final berth already booked -- they meet North Village on October 18 -- while Vasco's win earns them a place in the other semi-final against Dandy Town on October 23.
Vasco's emphatic victory came via goals from newcomers Clay Smith and Ottis Steede, and Dwight Basden.
The Portuguese club always appeared livelier with Clay Smith, Basden and Shawn Simons threatening to score whenever in range.
Although skipper Leroy Stevens played well, Boulevard's defence often had the look of desperation. But during a rare attack Boulevard almost snatched the lead, when after 43 minutes a free kick by left full back Gregg Foggo deflected off the wall and brushed off the woodwork.
However, Smith got the inevitable go-ahead goal a minute later when he coolly headed home a Keith Jennings cross from close range.
Smith gave Boulevard a scare after 48 minutes when he coolly beat centre back Stevens but watched in agony as his 15-yard scorcher was briliantly pushed wide by the diving Hendrickson.
But four minutes later Basden made it 2-0 when he slotted the ball home from close in after a build-up that featured Kentoine Jennings and Shawn Simons.
Defender Albert Caisey powered a 16-yarder over for Bouelvard during a counter attack and Neil Robinson fired a shot at the advancing Tim Figureido after slipping through on a breakaway, but these two chances after 57 and 61 minutes were the best that Boulevard managed in the second half.
Vasco's deserved third goal came after 87 minutes when Steede scored from 12 yards after the busy Basden provided him with the cross.
