McAllister recalls last moments with Speed

Gary McAllister (left) appeared alongside his former team-mate Gary Speed (right) on an English TV show just a day before the Wales manager was found dead at his home in an apparent suicide attempt.

A day after leaving Bermuda where he played in a celebrity golf tournament, Gary McAllister appeared alongside Gary Speed on English television’s Football Focus programme.Speed, McAllister’s former Leeds team-mate and close friend, was found dead at his home in an apparent suicide on Sunday morning. Why Speed would take his own life remained unclear yesterday.McAllister, who spoke to The Royal Gazette last Thursday during the Hacker’s Cup at Port Royal, said Speed seemed upbeat during the show with the pair talking about playing golf together soon.“Twenty minutes before we went on air on Saturday, he was the normal Gary Speed to me,” said McAllister, who, along with Olympic gold medallist Sir Steve Redgrave, was one of the star names playing in the Hacker’s Cup.“He was very excited about the prospects of the Welsh national team and was upbeat, looking class, immaculately presented. He was a movie star in my eyes.“There were no signs, nothing to suggest he was troubled. He looked well and things are going well for him at the moment. I could never have thought that 10-12 hours after I saw him I’d be getting that news. It’s a nightmare.“With no competitive Wales games until February we were talking about getting some golf organised.”The sudden death of the Wales manager and former Premier League star, who was only 42, shocked not only the British football world but also touched many people outside the sport.Speed was the first man to play 500 games in the Premier League and the youngest member of the midfield that carried Leeds to their most recent league title in 1992.The ex-Newcastle and Everton midfielder had overhauled Wales’ ailing national team and coached a young squad to four wins in their last five matches.Citing anonymous police sources, British media widely reported that Speed was found hanged in the garage of his home in Huntington, England, where he lived with his wife Louise and two sons.An inquest into Speed’s death will open today before a full hearing takes place at a later date.
