Driver plunges 70 feet down embankment
A 21-year-old Devonshire woman was fighting for life last night after receiving severe head injuries when her jeep rolled 70 feet down an embankment into Pembroke Marsh.
The woman was understood to have been thrown from her silver Diahatsu Terios jeep which was lying on top of her.
Passers-by who witnessed Friday night's accident and got to the scene before emergency services helped unpin the victim from the car.
A King Edward VII Memorial Hospital spokesman said last night the victim was on life support and in critical condition in the intensive care unit. She was in an unresponsive state when taken to KEMH.
Police said the woman was travelling east on Marsh Folly Road, near Dutton Avenue, Pembroke, when she lost control of her vehicle, broke through a wooden railing and tumbled into Pembroke Marsh. The jeep overturned on to its side or roof.
The road was closed between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. on Saturday to remove the jeep from the embankment below.
Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone with any information to contact them at 295-0011.
Fire Service Lt. Dana Lovell said that around 11.15 p.m. on Friday, they were notified that a car had overturned and gone down an embankment near the old Pembroke dump.
Lt. Lovell said the woman was alone in the car. Two fire engines and one ambulance were despatched.
Firemen had to scale the embankment twice - first to tend to the victim, then to carry her up to a waiting ambulance.
