Jeffrey gets the nod for JASON Project
as the Bermudian representative for the next JASON Project expedition.
Jeffrey Steynor, a Warwick Academy third-year student, was chosen to participate in JASON Project IX which will take place in California.
Jeffrey, along with two dozen other student argonauts, will travel to Monterey Bay to work with scientists between March 16 and 27, 1998.
The JASON team will be carrying out investigations on underwater kelp forests and Bay area otters.
Various aspects of the Project will also be filmed in Bermuda with both encounters being televised live each day.
JASON Foundation staff member Jude Kesl interviewed Jeffrey in July and was impressed with "his maturity when in a leadership position''.
Ms Kesl made her final selection by noting the "wide variety of extracurricular activities'' in which Jeffrey has been and continues to be involved.
Jeffrey's interests have had him committed as a junior sailing instructor, neighbourhood babysitter, Bermuda Junior Service League volunteer, primary school head boy and church alter boy.
He has also been a member of the Warwick Academy rugby, soccer, cricket and swim teams as well as the Bermuda Boys Brigade.
Meanwhile, the Bermuda Biological Station for Research will be electing eight local students to experience an educational week of diving.
BioStation scientists, Robbie Smith and Debbie Steinberg, will lead the chosen group in various underwater expeditions for seven days.
Interested students who are also qualified scuba divers are asked to contact Helle Patterson on 297-1889 for further information.
