Nurses were thanked for their dedication yesterday by the union that represents the health sector.

Kevin Grant, the general secretary designate of the Bermuda Public Service Union, said the Covid-19 pandemic made the work of nurses’ more important than ever.

He told the profession: “Your union is in awe at the courage, care and commitment that our nurses show to their patients and colleagues every day.

“For those nurses on the front line of the Covid battle, we extend a special thank you for your bravery and dedication to your profession and our people.”

Mr Grant was speaking as the island prepares to mark Nurses’ Week, which starts on Monday.

The international commemoration was designed to highlight the work of the profession around the world.

Mr Grant said that many of Bermuda’s nurses made time to contribute time to the BPSU despite other calls on their time.

He added that nurses had sat on the union’s General Council and Executive Committee, as well as on Standing Committees and as representatives at the union’s delegates’ conferences.

Mr Grant said: “BPSU is proud to represent all of Bermuda’s unionised nurses.”

He told nurses: “As members of the BPSU, nurses can be assured that your union is deeply committed to continue to effectively advocate on your behalf on all labour-related matters, especially during these unprecedentedly difficult times.

“Your union recognises your seemingly unending passion to serve on many fronts and we are filled with gratitude.“
