Junior golfers triumph
Ontario Junior Championships, winning three of the four divisions.
Facing the top young players from throughout Ontario over 54 holes on the Whirlpool Golf Club, Bermuda's Laura Robinson won the girls' division, Andrew Boyce placed first overall and first in the 12-14 boys group and Steven Roy snatched the honours in the 15-16 division.
Robinson, with rounds of 80-79-78, actually finished tied on 237 with fellow Bermuda player Ebonie Burgess (77-82-78) but then lifted the title on the first hole of a sudden-death play-off.
Stephanie Lewis of Bermuda placed fourth on 246 with rounds of 85-80-81.
Andrew Boyce triumphed in the 12-14 division after rounds of 76-75-74 for a 225 total which pipped Ontario's Nepean Touhey by a single stroke. Bermuda's Thomas Edwards was a further two shots back in third place after rounds of 79-76-73.
Bermuda snared another one-two finish in the 15-16 division as Steven Roy carded rounds of 73-77-79 for a 229 total which was three better than David Smith (73-75-84).
Sergio Edness and Doug Markey finished 14th and 17th on 247 and 250 respectively. Further down the field were Anthony Smith (256), Paul Murphy (262), David Boyce (264) and Barry DeCouto (282).
The only division a Bermuda player did not win was the boys' 17-18 in which Mississauga's Ryan Frankland defeated fellow Canadian Tyler McGhie in a play-off.
But Chris Smith (76-78-85) placed fourth on 239, seven shots back of the winner, having been tied for first going into the final round.
Scott Roy (83-82-85) finished 12th on 250 while further back was Sean Dunkley on 285.
ISLAND SQUASH TEAM CRASH SQU Island squash team crash Bermuda's boys crashed to a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Guyana in the Caribbean Junior Championships yesterday.
Kristian Jeffrey repeated his 3-2 victory in the individual event over Bermuda's Andrew Stout and although Andrew Robinson played well he was unable to overcome Damien DeSilva.
Michael Stout and Steven Smith played well on home soil but found Threon Mohabeer and Julian Chin, respectively, too tough.
James Stout scored the Island's only point with a convincing 3-0 win over Ryan Farnum.
Bermuda play the Bahamas at 2 p.m. today to see who is credited with third place in the tournament.
The Island's girls went down 4-1 to the mixed Jamaican and Guyanese team.
Laura Robinson scored the only point for the home team, defeating Dana King 9-2, 9-0, 9-7. They play Barbados for second place in the tournament at 2 p.m.
