Strong squad named for Mexico
Bermuda Olympic Association have named a squad of 14 athletes who will compete in six different sports at this month’s Pan Am Games.The squad includes track and field pair Tre Houston and Shianne Smith, equestrian duo Patrick Nisbett and Jill Terceira, sailor Malcolm Smith, triathletes Tyler Butterfield and Flora Duffy, three swimmers and four bowlers.Judy Simons, president of the BOA said she was confident the local contingent would make Bermuda proud.“Once again, Bermuda has assembled a strong team for the Pan American Games our twelfth Pan Am Games and we are looking forward to the competition,” she said. “We know Bermuda’s athletes will do our country proud.The Games will be held in Guadalajara, Mexico, from October 14 to 30. BOA general secretary Phillip Guishard will travel with the squad as Chef-de-Mission. “We are pleased that the BOA has been able to play a part in helping prepare and fund our athletes’ participation in such an important and high profile international sporting festival,” added Simons.“It is gratifying for all of us at the BOA to be able to play a part in these athletes’ ongoing journeys to success.”Bermuda first competed in the Pan American Games in 1967 at Winnipeg, Canada and has participated in all subsequent Pan American Games, winning a total of eight medals.Thousands of athletes from 42 countries, including 275 from the United States, will compete in 36 sports during the Games, the world’s second-largest sporting event after the Olympics.Bermuda’s squad: Swimming Kiera Aitken, Lisa Blackburn, Roy-Allan Burch Track and Field Tre Houston, Shianne Smith Equestrian Jillian Terceira, Patrick Nisbett Sailing Malcolm Smith Bowling Damien Matthews, Dianne Jones, June Dill, LeVinc Samuels Triathlon Flora Jane Duffy, Tyler Butterfield
