Rodney's the right man for the job

Dennico Hollis at last week's Bermuda Sports Awards

Bermuda newboy Dennico Hollis believes his Under-19 team-mate Rodney Trott is the right man to become the vice-captain of the senior national side.

Hollis and Trott were among six colts promoted to coach Gus Logie's new squad earlier this week with Trott handed the vice-captaincy duties.

Considered by many to be the natural successor to senior skipper Irving Romaine, Trott has been given the new role as part of Logie's plan to rotate the job.

"I am proud and happy that Rodney has finally been given the opportunity of moving up and having responsibility in the senior team," said seamer Hollis. 'He is also my team-mate at Bailey's Bay and I wish him the best.

"He has my full support as I play alongside him both internationally and domestically.

"Rodney's an attacking captain with excellent leadership qualities."

Hollis added that he believed his own experiences at the Under-19 World Cup, in India, would stand him in good stead for the senior team.

"It is an honour to be called up to the senior national team", said Hollis.

"I have always dreamed about representing Bermuda at this level and want to put my best foot forward.

"By going to the Under-19 World Cup I learned that you must be mentally tough and ready for whatever lies ahead.

"You must always be ready to compete with the best out there and what you put into training will show on the pitch."

Executive director of Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) Neil Speight said the rotation policy of the vice-captaincy would give a number of players responsibility experience.

"As you may be aware the selectors have made it quite clear months ago that the vice-captaincy position will be rotated, hence the reason that the likes of David Hemp, Stephen Outerbridge, and Dwayne Leverock have all had an opportunity in this role in recent times," said Speight.

"This policy gives players an opportunity of leadership experience at the national level and Rodney, having already established himself at the Under 19 level with distinction, has been given this chance as the coach and selectors requested that with the future in mind this is now as good a time as any."

The BCB has a selection committee made up of chairman Lionel Thomas, Winston Trott, Gus Logie and Albert Steede, who met and selected the 23-man squad, which was ratified by the executive committee.

The other Under-19 players promoted to the senior side include Jordan DeSilva, Tamauri Tucker, Ryan Tyrrell, McLaren Smith and Kyle Hodsoll.

The squad started training on Monday with four sessions planned each week.

Irving Romaine remains skipper and Janeiro Tucker is also included in the squad, although he is still on suspension from international duty.
