When she came home at 4.45 a.m. he put his hand over her mouth to stop her crying for help, Magistrates' Court was told on Thursday.

Anthony Grant, 34, admitted unlawfully entering his ex-wife's home and causing damage. He was fined $200 and given a six month conditional discharge.

Sgt. Earl Kirby, prosecuting, said that on March 26 Grant saw his ex-wife Sonya at the Spinning Wheel club. She was with a male friend.

The couple were in the throes of separation, and Grant became jealous. At 3 a.m. Grant walked into his ex-wife's home on North Shore Road, Pembroke, through an unlocked door.

At 4.45 a.m. she came back and found him sitting on the floor in their son's room.

He started questioning her about where she had been and put his hand over her mouth.

Later, he cut a mattress with a broken glass and broke a car key, causing $400 worth of damage.

Sgt. Kirby said the couple were now divorced.

Grant, of Parsons Road, Pembroke, told the court that before going to the Spinning Wheel, his ex-wife had taken him to the Shabba Ranks show at BAA.

"At the end of the evening I went back over to her house. I know that I have a restraining order, but with her and I being off-and-on, so to speak, I didn't break and enter her house. I walked through the door.'' Cutting the mattress was an accident, he said. He had a wine glass on the bed and it broke.

"She was supposed to have dropped these charges because since then she's been at my house, slept there and whatever.

"If I'm supposed to be restricted, why is it she comes to my house, sleeps with me and whatever? Who's the guilty person?'' But Sgt. Kirby said he had spoken to the ex-wife on Thursday, and she was adamant that the case go ahead.
