Allison to defend Amateur crown
Several of the Island?s top amateur golfers will be in the field for this week?s 77th edition of the Men?s Bermuda Amateur Match Play Championships which get underway at Mid Ocean Club tomorrow.
Among them will be defending champion Dave Allison and the man he beat in last year?s final, Anthony Mocklow, the former Bermuda professional now resident in England.
Former champions Robert Vallis and Arthur Jones will also be vying for another title.
Some 40 players have registered, a much lower entry than in previous years.
Tomorrow?s qualifying round will decide the medallist and which players will compete in the Championship Flight and the event will continue under match play, culminating with Saturday?s 36-hole final.
This week will also see the 75th Ladies? Match Play Championships at the same course where a new champion will be crowned as last year?s winner, Natasha Morgan of Wales, is unable to return.
Bermuda?s Laura Robinson and Susie Elton are expected to be among the contenders along with California?s Carmen Simpson.
Americans Joey and Ken Bosch held onto their lead to claim net honours in the final round of the ninth annual Pompano Couples Classic at windy Port Royal on Saturday.
Playing under the two-ball Pinehurst format off 50 percent handicap, the Boschs shot one-over-par 73 to finish on 22-under-par 189 for the 54-hole event which was also played at Riddell?s Bay and Belmont Hills.
Five shots back on 194 (17 under) were Marsha and Kevin Kirrane from Sandwich, Maryland, who finished with a four-over-par 75.
Low gross honours went to Billie and Doug Farr from Lake Charles, Los Angeles, who posted an overall total of 239 (28 over par) after a final round of 94.
Mary and Rudy Culumber of Vero Beach, Florida were the runners-up on retrogression over Lisa and Darrell Russell, of Alexandria, Los Angeles after both finished on 244 (33 over par). The Culumbers finished with an 88 and the Russells with 94.
