Retrial date set for shooting accused

A retrial is due to begin on May 30 for Marico Bassett, after a jury in his last trial was unable to reach a verdict on whether he shot Randolph Lightbourne.Mr Lightbourne, 44, suffered multiple gunshot wounds when he was attacked in the parking lot of the Charing Cross Tavern in Sandys in broad daylight last July.Mr Bassett, 20, of Sandys, continues to assert his innocence over charges of attempted murder and using a firearm. His lawyer, Marc Daniels, told the Supreme Court arraignments session yesterday that he will file paperwork on Monday contesting the retrial taking place. However, he agreed that if his submissions on the matter are not successful, then a trial date of May 30 is suitable. Puisne Judge Carlisle Greaves remanded Mr Bassett into custody in the meantime.
