Dr. David Saul, who led the vote count in the last election, came a close second with 1,044 votes. Dr. Saul lost votes on split ballots and voters who plumped for one candidate.

After the final count, Dr. Saul, who had predicted his second place finish earlier in the day, accounted for the small margin between himself and Mr.

Barritt. "John didn't have the baggage of the Minister of Finance,'' said Dr.

Saul. He noted that Mr. Barritt also benefited having the political mantle of his father, Mr. John Barritt.

"It was just as we had anticipated,'' said a happy Mr. Barritt. "I'm really pleased and proud. I became a candidate two years ago, and we have worked very hard at this for the past 18 months.

"I'm humbled by the confidence placed in me by the electorate.'' The lawyer said that since he won the UBP primary two years ago, he and Dr.

Saul had been working on constituency issues such as road paving, street lighting and other neighbourhood issues.

Political veteran Mr. Comrade Richard Lynch -- who has run in every election since 1968 -- brought up the rear of the race with a total vote count of 507.

He kept his promise made at the last election, saying: "I'll be back -- you can count on that.'' "The PLP has never gone over 500 votes before,'' said Mr. Lynch, adding that the total number of votes cast for the PLP accounted for approximately one third of the vote.

Fishermen's leader Danny Farias, who supported his bid for the House with a full-page advertisement highlighting fisheries in The Royal Gazette on Monday, pulled into third place.

Earlier yesterday Mr. Farias said: "I have never let the issue die. Hopefully the fisheries will be restored and managed properly.

"The last thing I can do as a representative of the fishermen is to run for the House of Parliament. It will be nice to see what Bermuda people think of a fisherman and an ordinary person.'' Mr. Farias noted that the issues he pledged to work on included the environment and the fight against pollution.

After the votes were counted, he said: "I feel good about it. I have certainly had a grand time doing it. Coming in late, and to have the voters turn out under such harsh conditions, it was an honour and I love them for it.
