Cruise ship solution
April 22, 2011Dear Sir,Instead of placing two cruise ships in Dockyard, why not have only one, and have the second one anchored off St George’s and ferry people into the Old Town? The cruise ship that only stays for one day goes to Dockyard, the cruise ship that stays for more than one day goes to anchor off St George’s. Does that make sense? With a cruise ship anchored off St George’s and passengers coming ashore they would have an easier access to beaches in the St George’s area.As what happens right now everybody going to a beach has to go to Horseshoe Bay but if passengers were ferried to St George’s you have Tobacco Bay, St Catherine’s beach plus all those lovely beaches at Southside like Clearwater, Turtle Beach and the beaches of Cooper’s Island.Running buses or transportation to and from Horseshoe Bay takes a lot longer than placing a cruise ship off St George’s and ferrying people to the Old Town and using the beaches in the St George’s area.Private enterprises could develop if the suggestion was put in place of a cruise ship anchored off St George’s, taxi operators could be used more effectively, and mini buses could be used more effectively. In my opinion the infrastructure of Dockyard is not geared to handle some 6,000 passengers plus ships’ crews in any one given day. There’s always the possibility that if there was a serious accident, or shootings on the main roads in the Western area, the roads would be closed while investigations were in progress and there’s always the possibility that our little Somerset Bridge were to have a structure fault what would we do then?St George’s would not have the same problems.I maintain that Government has to get their priorities right; all this money spent on cricket and football should be ploughed into tourism and inviting more exempted companies to our islands. If buses are a problem, let’s get more, if drivers are a problem, teach more people to drive buses. If ferries are a problem, get more!We seem to operate on a “shoestring” mentality; if we are going to have tourism (and exempt companies) as our main support of our islands, you have to have the infrastructure in place to handle the situation properly.PETER BROMBY SrPaget
