Village host vibrant Boulevard

two! This weekend's installment of `The Clash of Giants' set for Bernard Park promises to be hot -- and not only because of the teams' two nicknames.

Current Coca-Cola First Division leaders Village will be anxious to avenge an earlier 2-0 defeat at the hands of Boulevard, which eliminated them from the Martonmere Cup, while the latter seek a continuance of a winning streak currently numbering five matches.

It is a match-up of similar styles, with each utilising an intricate short-passing game, combining stingy defences -- an identical two goals allowed in five league matches -- and quick-strike ability in attack.

The comparisons continue as they also both employ danger-men in a roving role just behind the front-runners. The skillful Dwight Warren carries the tag for Boulevard, while counterpart Elliott Jennings has been proficient in the position for Village.

Adding to the intrigue is that all will want to make a good showing and remain in contention for the Dudley Eve Trophy competition that takes place over the Christmas break involving the top four sides.

Meanwhile, former leaders Dandy Town, similarly locked on eight points along with Boulevard and Village, but trailing on goal difference, could well emerge from the weekend on top if the aforementioned pair draw and the Hornets are able to win.

They appear to have drawn the right prescription in the form of tonight's game against PHC (8 p.m. at PHC), who have struggled in recent weeks as evidenced by a ninth-place standing and four losses against a solo league victory.

Still, coach Mark Trott has to be hopeful that his forwards bring their scoring boots to this contest after witnessing a woeful display of finishing in their last match that cost them two points against Southampton Rangers.

Also trying to get well in a hurry are Somerset when they travel the length of the Island to Wellington Oval to face bitter enemies St. George's.

The reigning league champions have looked anything but champions in recent weeks, instead bordering on mediocrity.

In St. George's they find a side riding a crest following their first victory of the 1993-94 campaign who have baffled them in the past -- especially at Wellington -- most recently in January when the east-enders blasted the Trojans 4-2 spurred by a Clay Smith hat-trick.

Smith is out this time due to his commitment to the national cricket team as is Dean Minors, so others will certainly have to step forward.

Other matches have recent promotees Southampton and Vasco battling at Southampton Oval, while Devonshire Colts make their way to Lord's in hope of adding to the misery of bottom side St. David's.

In the Daihatsu Second Division, Somerset Eagles entertain Social Club and BAA play host to Port Royal.
