to prison for six months.

Garath John Hayward, of no fixed abode, admitted in Magistrates' Court to stealing $85 from his uncle, stealing a motorcycle, riding it while disqualified, and riding without third party insurance.

Police saw Hayward riding a cycle, which was reported stolen, on Par-la-Ville Road on October 18.

Prosecutor Insp. Peter Duffy said Hayward was stopped at the gas station on Richmond Road and the cycle was impounded.

He was later arrested and admitted stealing the cycle. He was also off the raod until April 9, 1997.

Insp. Duffy said Hayward was living with his uncle John Alexander Powell at St. Anne's Road, Southampton last December when he stole $85 from a night table in his uncle's room.

Hayward said at the time he was under the influence of alcohol and admitted having an alcohol and cocaine problem.

Hayward, who had previous convictions for breaking and entering and stealing had his first alcoholic drink at age 11, duty counsel Mr. Tyrone Chin said.

By 15, Hayward was a heavy drinker and he was using cocaine by the time he was 19.

Mr. Chin said Hayward had been impriosned in 1990 and on his release he sought drug rehabiliation. He was clean until last August.

Hayward also intended to pay his uncle back, Mr. Chin said.

"From what I can see you have a very bad record,'' Mr. Francis told Hayward.

"I just hope that, notwithstanding the sentence I intend to impose on you, you will take full advantage of the opportunity to enter a rehabilitation programme while in prison.'' Mr. Francis sentenced Hayward to four months in prison for stealing the cycle; two months for stealing $85; two months and a year off the road for driving while disqualified; and two months for riding without third party insurance.
