Terceira picks up eight faults

Flying high: Terceira is in 113th position in Normandy

Jillian Terceira is sitting in 113th position out of 153 riders after the opening day of the individual first competition in the jumping event at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games in Normandy, France, yesterday.

Terceira, riding Tamerino, completed the speed course with eight faults for a time score of 98.39 seconds, which converts into 11.19 points.

Bertram Allan, of Ireland, riding Molly Malone V, leads the event after completing the course in a time of 77.01. Terceira, a two-times Olympian, is Bermuda’s only rider in Normandy.

She said: “The jumps were beautifully decorated but quite spooky for the horse. The spectators were very vocal and the atmosphere was electric.”

The speed course was set at 1.50 metres and a crowd of over 10,000 watched the event, which continues today with second competition round one. The finals are set for Sunday. Since 1990 in Stockholm, Sweden, the FEI World Equestrian Games have been held every four years in between the Olympic Games, and encompass every discipline of the sport.

The 2010 Games were held in Lexington, Kentucky.

Terceira has represented Bermuda in two Olympic Games (2008 and 2012) and two Pan American Games (2007 and 2011) and is Bermuda’s lone representative in Normandy.

The 43-year-old’s previous event was last month in Austria in Wiener Neustadt at the Ostarichi Grand Prix, a three-star event, where she finished 43rd out of 62 competitors.
