GBH trial delayed again after juror falls ill

The trial of a man accused of inflicting grievous bodily harm on Jelani (Roots) Butterfield in December, 2002 was delayed yet again yesterday after another juror fell ill.

Brandon (Cal) Barnes Brockett, 21, of Farm Lane, Warwick was originally charged with the attempted murder of Mr. Butterfield in an alleged knife attack at Club Malabar in Dockyard ? although Puisne Judge Carlisle Greaves ruled on Monday Brockett had no case to answer.

The case has been plagued with delays since it began, after the only man on the 12-person jury was left bedridden and dangerously ill for close to two weeks.

An attempt to restart proceedings begins this morning at 9.30 a.m, when Brockett will continue his testimony.

Brockett claimed on Monday he was attacked by Mr. Butterfield in the men?s toilets and was acting merely in self-defence.

Dwayne Caines is representing the Crown while Victoria Pearman is defence counsel.
