Make Police visible on city streets

Mayor of Hamilton Jay Bluck has met with Premier Alex Scott to discuss his concerns about policing.

Mr. Bluck believes there are not enough officers on patrol in the city, and has made repeated calls for this to be addressed.

"There are no officers visible on the streets and this is not an acceptable situation. Officers would certainly act as a deterrent but I think that the Commissioner of Police believes community beat officers are pass?," he said. "We're still getting youngsters beaten in the city. These things are very bad for Bermuda's image."

Mr. Bluck claimed that three beat officers put on duty in Hamilton last year were withdrawn after just a few months ? with one officer with 20 years of experience transferred to gate duty at Government House.

"He was beginning to have a good effect on a number of areas but they took him away about a year ago," said Mr. Bluck, describing the security gate post as "a menial task", for someone with such experience.

He said of the Premier's reaction when he told him at their July 6 meeting that the city does not have community beat officers: "He seemed quite surprised. He thought we still had them. He said he would try to work on the issue."

Mr. Bluck is due to meet with Police at the Combined Operations centre in Prospect today to discuss CCTV. He has previously expressed concerns that the cameras watching over the city are not being continuously monitored.
