Foster Wheeler lands Louisiana steam generator contract

A Bermuda-based engineering company has won a contract to design and supply new steam generators in Louisiana.

Foster Wheeler Ltd. announced yesterday that a subsidiary of its Global Power Group has been awarded a contract by Entergy Louisiana, LLC, a subsidiary of Entergy Corporation, for the design and supply of two circulating fluidised-bed (CFB) steam generators.

The two CFBs and associated auxiliary equipment will be a part of the Little Gypsy 3 Repowering Project located in Montz, Louisiana, near New Orleans. Foster Wheeler has received a full notice to proceed on this contract. The terms of the award were not disclosed, and the contract will be included in the company's bookings for the first-quarter of 2008.

The new system will deliver a baseload of 538 net megawatt electric output and will have the capability of using petroleum coke, a plentiful and inexpensive refining by-product, as well as coal to produce electricity. Commercial operation of the plant is scheduled for the first quarter of 2012.

"We are pleased to be selected by Entergy Louisiana to play a part in this important project," said Gary Nedelka, president and CEO of Foster Wheeler North America Corp. "A fundamental benefit of CFB technology is its naturally low emission level of nitrogen oxide and sulphur dioxide - a benefit that is especially dramatic when compared to the older equipment that is replaced in a repowering project such as Little Gypsy 3."

• Foster Wheeler Ltd. has announced that its South African subsidiary Foster Wheeler South Africa (Pty) Ltd., part of its Global Engineering and Construction Group, has been selected by Sasol Technology (Pty) Ltd. to perform a pre-feasibility study for a proposed new coal-to-liquids facility, known as Project Mafutha in South Africa.

The contract value was not disclosed and the project will be included in the company's first-quarter 2008 bookings.

The planned stand-alone greenfield coal-to-liquids facility would produce approximately 80,000 barrels per day of synthetic fuel. A potential location for the facility will be evaluated as part of the study.

"Foster Wheeler is pleased to be involved in this pre-feasibility study for Project Mafutha," said Steve Scott, managing director of Foster Wheeler South Africa (Pty) Ltd. "This latest award builds on our long-established relationship with Sasol."
