Bermudian educator Fred Ming has become the latest victim of a Bermuda College shake-up.

Dr. Ming, who has served as vice president of development for the past five years, received a letter from the College last Friday informing him of his redundancy.

And while the 47-year-old father of three declined to comment in detail about the situation, his departure was believed to have been unexpected.

When Dr. Ming was named to his post in August, 1992, his appointment was viewed as part of an effort to increase the overall efficiency of the college in terms of its requirements at that time and in the future.

At that time College president George Cook said the vice president's duties would include the development of the College's research capabilities which would mean combining forces with overseas establishments to generate a wider range of data and information.

He said Dr. Ming would also be responsible for human resources and fundraising and would serve on the College's admissions committee.

But Dr. Cook, in a brief statement released yesterday, said Dr. Ming's departure was due to major restructuring at the organisation's executive level.

"A review of the structure was undertaken and as a result, the Board of Governors have decided, in the interests of greater efficiency and economy, to contract the structure,'' he stated.

As a result of this two positions -- Controller which is occupied by Karen Kirkwood who retires at the end of October and Vice President, Development held by Dr. Ming -- "have become redundant to the college's future needs to deliver programmes and services to our customers'', he added.

The responsibilities for the posts have been redesigned and reassigned to Dr.

Cook and a new position of Chief Financial and Operations Officer which will be advertised shortly.

When asked why Dr. Ming could not take up the new post, a College spokesperson said the Chief Financial and Operations Officer needed to have a strong accounting background and demonstrated experience in the financial aspects of the college.

Educated at Berkeley Institute and the defunct Academic Sixth Form Centre, Dr.

Ming obtained his B.Sc. from the University of Ottawa and his Master's degree from the University of Guelph. He also received the Sir John Cox Scholarship for Postgraduate Studies.

After teaching in Bermuda's secondary school system for some years, Dr. Ming obtained his Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia.

As a specialist in industrial management, research and development, he lectured at Simon Fraser University and acted as a consultant to the province of British Columbia and the Canadian Government.

Dr. Ming, when contacted at home yesterday, would only say: "I think I probably need to get on with my life at this time.'' His departure followed the aborted redundancy of the College's associate manager of recreational and sports programmes and facilities, Norbert Simons.

Mr. Simons made headlines earlier this year when news that he was to be made redundant hit the campus and prompted more than 100 students to stage a protest and sit-in. The redundancy was later reversed.
