Pump room flooding forces container ship to stop for repairs

Flooding in a pump room forced the 610-foot US container ship Export Freedom to make an unexpected stop in local waters yesterday.

Capt. John Moore of Meyer Agencies said the ship had water in its pump room and would probably be in Bermuda for about three days for repairs.

The vessel, which was on its way from Charleston, South Carolina, to Italy, berthed at Dockyard.

The ferry boat Patience will also be having some repairs done after an incident this weekend when it was used to transfer people to and from the aircraft carrier the USS George Washington.

Marine and Ports director Ron Ross said the boat had received damage to its stern as it had been crashing up against the rubber fender of the aircraft carrier in the severe weather conditions.

In other news from the docks, the Oleander container ship arrived in Bermuda on Sunday with 100 dry containers, including 45 that were refrigerated, eight cars, a truck, a boat, a trailer and six buses.

The Bermuda Islander arrived in Hamilton on Monday, from New Jersey, with a total of 100 containers, ten of which were refrigerated. The ship left Bermuda the same day.

The container ship Somers Isle arrived in Hamilton on Tuesday morning with 87 containers -- eight that were refrigerated, one jeep, three boats, a forklift, a truck and 31 bundles of lumber.

The ship will return to Florida today.

The Iver Express arrived on Monday evening at the Esso oil docks to discharge fuel and sailed on Tuesday afternoon.

Today, the LPG tanker The Carribean Venture will be stopping over from Trinidad off-loading over 700 metric tons of liquid propane.

It will dock at the oil terminal at Ferry Reach in St. George's.

A cable ship, Global Mariner will also arrive tomorrow to off-load cable to the Cable and Wireless dock in Dockyard.

On Monday a Danish naval ship will arrive in Dockyard and will leave the next day.

In cruise ship news, the Zenith arrived in Hamilton on Monday with 1,630 passengers from New York.

The ship shifted to St. George's yesterday morning and will depart this afternoon for New York.

The Dreamward arrived in St. George's on Monday morning, from New York, with 1,402 passengers. It shifted to Hamilton on Tuesday morning and will leave the island this afternoon.

The Meridian arrived in Dockyard after sailing from New York with 1,257 passengers. It will return to New York tomorrow.

The Royal Majesty brought a total of 943 passengers to St. George's on Tuesday and will leave tomorrow.

The Song of America also arrived in St. George's on Tuesday with 1,444 passengers. It moved to Hamilton yesterday and will leave tomorrow.
