'I'll stand for re-election' says BFA chief Mussenden

Bermuda Football Association (BFA) president Larry Mussenden has confirmed he will seek re-election during September's Annual General Meeting (AGM) when the association's top post goes up for grabs.

The ex-Attorney General and senator has served as BFA president for the past seven years and is the man largely credited for bringing the association's ambitious multi-million dollar six-year strategic plan to fruition.

During his term, Mussenden has forged "good working relations" with his fellow executives and BFA affiliates who will ultimately decide whether to stick with the incumbent or opt for fresh leadership.

And if all goes in his favour at the AGM, the ex-Bermuda Regiment Major plans to be around to ensure the association's short and long-term objectives continue to be met.

Mussenden said: "I will be seeking re-election in September. I have been humbled to be able to serve the affiliates and the associates over the years and wish to continue the good work that we have started and done together.

"We have developed a long-term plan and have secured considerable funding (from Government) to accomplish the aims as set out in that Strategic Plan. We are in year two of that plan and we have more work to do.

"Over my years as president, we have forged good working relationships between president, executive and affiliates and we have accomplished many objectives as we have worked hard to develop and improve all areas of the game for the benefit of the 'family of football'.

"Our affiliates, our players, our coaches, parents, spectators and communities have all been both participants and beneficiaries of the hard work, commitment and dedication."

Mussenden added: "I am grateful to various entities for all their support to me and their hard work over the years, the affiliates for their support and confidence over the years. I have been lucky to have forward thinking affiliate presidents and affiliate executives who have all been able to discuss opportunities and resolve any issues.

" . . . the players and coaches, senior and junior, male and female, who bring dedication and commitment to the game as they represent their clubs and communities in leagues and competitions.

"It has always been a joy to present medals and trophies to the teams in the finals or who have won leagues. It has been humbling to share their grief, losses and tears.

" . . . the referees who form the important third team on the field and who officiate for their love of the game. I appreciate all their hard work and expertise.

". . . the spectators who make it a daily pleasure to work hard for them and who never fail to stop me, shout out to me, e-mail me, text me or call me to share their thoughts on a football matter.

". . . the media who recognise the importance of football in Bermuda and who report on football activities fairly and accurately - and who sometimes are not afraid to retract a story and say sorry when they get it wrong.

". . . to all the participants, and to those who aspire to be, in our national programmes who give their all for the right to represent Bermuda on the world stage whether its the FIFA world Cup or smaller international competitions. They all know that I am a keen supporter of our national programmes and want us to succeed on the world stage.

". . . the BFA staff who perform their work to a high standard and who have never hesitated to carry out any tasks that I have asked them to do.

"They are the right people to have on the team and they have joined with me in working hard to accomplish our aims.

". . . to the executives members, past and present, who have given their best to football to make it a better sport.

"We don't always agree but we make the collective decisions in the best interests of football.

". . . the Government of Bermuda, who have shown their confidence in BFA with their moral support and financial commitment in BFA for all their good work. Also, for their grant of several parcels of land to allow the BFA to have their first, and a first-class, home for their national training centre.

". . . our regional and world bodies CFU, CONCACAF, and FIFA for their full confidence in BFA and for granting GOAL funding for the development of our national training centre. "

Also up for grabs at September's AGM will be the BFA's second vice-president's post that is currently occupied by long-serving police officer Gregory Grimes
