Smith appeals for justice for fellow MP
Assembly's help to obtain justice in a foreign country.
Opposition Leader Jennifer Smith requested that the House use its Commonwealth connections to press Nigerian officials to seek justice after a PLP MP and his friends were attacked on a visit to the country.
Ms Smith said PLP backbencher Ottiwell Simmons was attacked on his last night in the African country.
She said Mr. Simmons and his party were attacked by bandits after their car was stopped by some nails in the road.
Ms Smith said Eddie Richardson and the driver of the car were stabbed by the bandits and approximately $3,000 was lost by Mr. Simmons and his entourage during the heist.
The incident was reported to Nigerian officials, she said, as well as a number of Commonwealth organisations in a bid to obtain justice.
But nothing has been done she said and last night she appealed to the House to take note of this and pass the information on to Commonwealth authorities.
St. George's North MP Leon (Jimmy) Williams asked the Government to "democratise'' the Corporations of St. George's and Hamilton.
Mr. Williams, a St. George's North common councillor, said there were no allowances for pre-voting if some was is away or in the hospital.
Tourism Minister David Dodwell said that both Corporation representatives first needed to collectively decide they want change and if or when they decide that issue, then they should approach the House.
During the motion to adjourn, Stanley Morton (PLP) criticised UBP backbencher Michael Dunkley's comments regarding hotel hiring policies in The Royal Gazette .
Mr. Morton said Mr. Dunkley's comment that hotels should be allowed to employ foreign workers would disillusion the public.
But Mr. Dunkley insisted that the reporter covering his speech in the House of Assembly on Wednesday did not report his comments in detail.
He claimed he said hotels did have the right to hire foreigners only if there were no Bermudians available for the jobs.
Also during the motion to adjourn, Hamilton East MP Renee Webb (PLP) urged the Works Minister to widen the Wilkinson Avenue and North Shore Roads in Hamilton Parish.
Ms Webb said the much travelled roads were dangerous to visitors and residents.
Ms Webb also urged the Education Minister to keep the House abreast of the "desperate situation'' at the Berkeley Institute where there is currently a shortage of teachers.
And Ms Webb said she was "warmed'' to hear that members of the UBP being "hard done by'' The Royal Gazette .
She said it was the PLP which was usually given a hard time by the newspaper.
